To the Community of ESTAR(SER) and all its correspondents, associates, consultants, stipendiary researchers, and editors, including all anonymous informants belonging to the Order of the Third Bird:
The following is a
CALL FOR PAPERS for the
2016 ESTAR(SER) Joint Symposium hosted by
The Museum of Jurassic Technology in
Los Angeles, California
~ SEPTEMBER 10, 2016 ~
THE TASK OF ESTAR(SER),
Concerned as it is with the relationship of historical knowledge (and the practices that produce it) to the Order of the Third Bird, is: to free the Order’s storied past from the marmoreal medium of history, much as a sculpture emerges from stone. To our great and perennial research consortium, armed with untiring attention, zealous erudition, and constant vigilance, the Order is the map and the headlamp of our labyrinthine explorations, but also its pickaxe and indeed, its dynamite. The Order of the Third Bird does not represent the sole reason for ESTAR(SER)’s efforts, but it does represent a sufficient reason. Thus any collection or presentation of the works of ESTAR(SER), both by design and inevitably of itself, must become an alternative manual of the Order, a fragmentary history of the Order, and a guide to the forms it observes, the concepts it adumbrates, and the principles by which it abides.
HENCE AND THEREFORE,
And primarily for those who have ears to hear, the 2016 Joint Symposium and all that issues from it will play this role. For those who do not, it will appear within the domain of what is called historiographical fiction, and can be fully appreciated in that form).
FURTHER,
It is foreseen that the 2016 Joint Symposium will be propaedeutic to the emergence of a much-needed VOLUME — to wit, a Collected Proceedings of ESTAR(SER), containing a selection of the more significant extant contributions to the history of the Order and its mores and doings. Contributors to the Joint Symposium are encouraged to consider the possibility of their work appearing in this prospective volume.
THE JOINT SYMPOSIUM...
Will be held on the weekend of September 10 at the Foshay Masonic Lodge near the Museum of Jurassic Technology, before the general public as well as (it is rumored) actual representatives of the Order of the Third Bird from all over the world. Associates of ESTAR(SER) will deliver approximately five presentations of approximately half an hour in length, each of which will be followed by an attentional exercise based on the presented material, where members of the audience will be invited to participate in a historically significant form of aesthetic attention. These longer presentations and exercises will be followed by an exhibition of other significant materials and finding (contributions to this component of the Symposium can be thought of as short “poster presentations” and are not expected to require accompanying exercises).
IF YOU ARE NOW OR WILL SOON BE CONDUCTING RELEVANT RESEARCH...
Consider presenting this material at the Joint Symposium, either as a short or long form presentation). Persons so inclined are encouraged to submit a short descriptive proposal to the Planning committee of the Symposium. The deadline for proposing your participation in the events of the Symposium, as presenter or author, is:
Monday, May 16, 2016
All proposals regarding the 2016 Joint Symposium should be submitted to the Corresponding Secretary at [email protected]; please cc the Editor of the Proceedings, Catherine Hansen, at [email protected].
SIGNIFICANTLY,
Those seeking to resolve historical or theoretical questions germane to research on the Order of the Third Bird should be aware that such matters may be taken up in correspondence with the Secretary Locotenant of the Order at [email protected].
FINALLY, BE IT KNOWN...
That the Editor of the Proceedings is inclined to assemble a body of draft texts and works in progress in advance of the Joint Symposium, suitable for circulation at the Symposium itself, and serving as forerunner, herald and prototype of the volume of The Collected Proceedings of ESTAR(SER) to come. If you are now conducting research that is sufficiently advanced that it might be included in this publication, please contact the Editor as soon as possible. And, in general and in conclusion, rest assured that the Editor welcomes submissions of texts, documents, précis, images, etc., from all who are in possession of same, whether the author-researchers are able to join the events of September 2016 or no.
IN PURSUIT OF THESE ENDS, WE ARE FAITHFULLY YOURS,
Catherine Hansen, Editor, The Proceedings of ESTAR(SER)
