A fantastic documentary-- slow, patient, non-judgmental:
It's hard to watch this and fail to recognize the obvious parallels to varieties of communal exuberance that educated, secular, urbanites are much more likely to judge positively. I myself have used the term 'snake-charmer' pejoratively, to refer to anti-Enlightenment elements in society, and particularly in American society. But this is fairly inconsistent on my part, since I also acknowledge that one of the unfortunate legacies of the Enlightenment has been to put many varieties of religious experience off-limits. These backward hillbillies appear to be having depths of experience that people like me can only know by watching documentaries.
